Next of King follows police officer Truman, played by Patrick Swayze, as he investigates the death of his brother and is pulled between his loyalties to the law, his wife (played by Helen Hunt) and his brother (played by Liam Neeson).
After his brother is killed, Truman tries to follow the law and stick to the proper procedures, however this is made difficult when his country family decide that it's an eye-for-an-eye and they want justice now. Also included in this film are Adam Baldwin as the over enterprising gangster, Ben Stiller as the heir apparent and Andreas Katsulas as the head gangster.
The film itself is....rather average, especially compared to other films released during 1989. I wouldn't call it a must see, but it's not a bad film either just....middling which makes it a little bit hard to review this since there really isn't a whole lot to say. I think the only real complaint I have is how the cemetery scene at the end pits Swayze against a group of gangsters wielding machine guns while he takes them on armed only with a knife and a bow and arrows.

100th Post! 10 Top 10 Countdowns.
Just to start off, this will be a hell of a long post. Due to this, I will attempt to be brief in each countdown and will most likely go into further detail as we meet each character, episode or moment in future reviews and character profiles.
Top 10 Batman Villains:
Going into this list, I thought of a few things that would influence my choices. What they've done, their visual appearance and their one biggest "victory" or accomplishment. All this is based off the Batman The Animated series and not other incarnations.

Snakes On A Plane
"I have had it with these mother f---ing snakes, on this mother f---ing plane!" How I could not agree more, Samuel L Jackson.
After witnessing Eddie Kim commit a murder, Sean is taken onto a large plane by FBI agents Flynn and Sanders so that he can testify in LA against Kim. However, the man is prepared to do whatever it takes to keep Sean from doing this and plants a large crate of poisonous snakes on the plane, and circulates a pheromone that makes them even more aggressive and prone to attack people without being provoked.
What follows is chaos. The snakes are unleashed halfway through the flight and make quick work of a majority of the films extras, and traps the survivors at the front of the plane. When Agent Sanders is killed, it is up to Flynn and stewardess Clare to help keep people alive until the plane can be landed. As they try to repel the snakes in the air, Special Agent Harris enlists the aid of Dr. Steven Price so that they can gather all of the needed anti venom to save those who have been bitten on the plane.
Snakes on a Plane isn't exactly scary at all, the action not quite as large a "thrill-ride" as some claim it to be. The CGI snakes look pretty poor in my opinion and could have been handled better. A fair part of the dialogue and interactions feel quite awkward, especially in the beginning of the plane ride as well gets a bit silly - Samuel L Jacksons "speech" near the end most notably. There is also one large plot hole I can't help but scratch my head at. If these hyper aggressive snakes are all crammed in the same crate, why the hell didn't they all kill each other? As well, why did they include an enormous 19 foot python? Surely that one snake being removed would have made room for at least a dozen more poisonous ones.
Despite his silly speech, Samuel L Jackson is probably one of the better parts of this film, as well as the presence of Juilianna Margulies. Both actors do their best with an awkward script and a mediocre idea. Recommended as a popcorn flick only, but don't expect anything too great.

The Expendables
Stallone. Willis. Li. Lundgren. Statham. Austin. Schwarzeneggar. Rourke. All these leading action stars of the 80's and 90's come together in one large ensemble cast for the Expendables.
Stallone leads the all star cast as a mercenary group, who we at first find dealing with a pirate group off of the coast of Somalia. We are quickly introduced to our group, sans a few of the mentioned names. After a small moral complication, Lundgren's character is kicked out of the group due to his drug abuse and psychological problems. Returning to New Orleans, they are soon offered a new job to overthrow a dictator in South America. Taking on the job the group is soon thrown into a small web of betrayal and lies that ends in an explosive confrontation on the fictional island as they go in to do what they do best.
The film truly does have an all star cast of action actors, though some are not quite as well known to me as others. Sadly Jean Claude Van Damme is not present in this film, nor is Steven Seagal despite both being offered roles. We do however have a great cameo scene where Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis take on the roles of a rival mercenary leader and a mysterious employer. A small shame that those two were not able to have larger roles in the film.

Aside from the small casting choices that irked me, the only real complaint that I have about the film is just how dark things can be at times and makes it difficult to track what is going on at times. Well worth a watch to action fans, or those looking to see what all the fuss is about.

Punisher: War Zone
The Punisher, oddly enough a fitting title given how much of a punishment watching this film can be. Not so much a sequel to the original Punisher, for some reason Marvel decided to reboot things instead.
Now, the film can be entertaining but it still lacks a lot of depth. All of the shootouts are so over the top it gets a bit silly. Our lead, Frank Castle, barely shows any emotion. Now while this might be just part of the character, the actor who portrays him still can't seem to really make the man likeable enough. Our villains are so over the top they make Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey from Batman Forever look sinister at times. Another detracting factor is just how overly done the gore can be for a Marvel film.
Through the film we find that the Punisher leaves a crime boss horribly disfigured. Swearing revenge on him the crime boss renames himself "Jigsaw" and proceeds to do whatever it takes to get even with the Punisher. We also find early in that an FBI agent was killed in the crossfire which brings down some added pressure to our hero as a fellow agent does everything he can to bring him in.

Cats and Dogs
So, Cats and Dogs. I much prefer the former myself, despite their apparent association with being evil. But, that aside we have canine heroes in this film as the two wage a secret war on each other.
We find a young, adorable puppy named Lou who is voiced by Toby Maguire (who is not adorable). He is quickly adopted into the home of a scientist played by Jeff Goldblum, despite his allergy to dogs. It seems that he is working on creating a cure for man's allergy to canines. This of course, makes the cats rather unhappy about it and lead by their leader Mr. Tinkles (I kid you not) they decide to use it to make all humans allergic to dogs.
Oof.
What follows is a rather boring film as the cats make attempts to steal the formula, while the dogs try to keep them from obtaining it. In the end the cats do get their hands, (er paws?), on the formula and start to put their plan into motion but in the end the dogs save the day.
Thankully this movie is about 10 minutes shorter than most other films, perhaps because they ran out of "interesting" things to do. The acting is rather dull, and my dislike for Goldblum only furthers the lack of interest. CGI and other effects feel sub par and there are more plotholes than I care to address, but I will say this, a dog United Nations council in the earths core. If you can explain that logically I applaud you.

Cyborg
Starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Deborah Richter, Vincent Klyn and Dayle Haddon this movie is generally a long series of fights strung along a very thin plot if it could really be called that.
The movie largely centers on Van Damme who plays Rickenbacker, a slinger as he travels to seek revenge on Fender (played by Klyn) and his cannibalistic pirates who have kidnapped Pearl Prohphet the half human, half robot who contains needed information on how to cure the plague that befell the world. Each of the three major players has something generally odd about them, from Van Damme's superhealing to the odd fascination in making a slightly big deal over the villain's eyes.
To be fully honest, the pirates come off more as...deranged pirates. The cannibalism seems far more downplayed. Even then, the timeline is a tad annoying as we often get flashbacks, some repetitive in the case of Rickenbacker's. It's almost as if they didn't know what to do and so they decided to fill time by showing us the same flashback story over and over but the last time showing us the full thing. My question is, why not just show us the entire thing once through in the start and cut to X number of years later?
Now, if this is the future...where are all the guns? Even if the world fell into ruin which prevented futuristic guns, surely that doesn't mean older models aren't still floating around? Or vehicles of some sort. Also. Why Atlanta? Of all the cities that are still...decently populated or deemed safe, why that one? Why won't the plot explain any of this! *sighs*
Another thing noticed upon this viewing, is how the same sets seem to be recycled a bit. We get two sets of beach scenes and warehouse fights. Did they just really suck at travelling or do ruins just look that similar?
Something I don't understand is how halfway in the film, one villain is able to keep Van Damme busy long enough for backup to arrive and subdue him. Yet earlier, he was able to take on multiple other pirates. Did the other just suck that badly? And why didn't the pirate leader just use that plan right away if it's so effective?
Based off all these questions, it's hard to really say anything good about the plot when so much could have been done to better explain the current state of the world other than the quite brief overview we receive as the film opens.
Now, as we reach the end, Van Damme is nailed up on a cross. Yet minutes later in Atlanta his wounds seem healed, however we are given no indication of how much time has passed. Has it been days? Weeks? How did he heal so fast after having things nailed through his arms? If they're in the city why is there no backup from good guys? One final question would be...why the hell does Van Damme succeed against the pirates this time after getting his ass kicked last time by one guy and cavalry who stood and watched? *headdesk* Logic. It seems to be lacking here.
The fight against the leader, Fender is quite long and just when you think he's dead, the bugger gets right back up and keeps on going as if he were related to Jason or Freddy. Please, just die now and stay dead so we can wrap this movie up before any more oddities can jump out at me. Oh wait. Too late. The lead? Doctor stands there and greets Pearl home. So did they not realize she was outside nearly dying? Do they not have some form of guards who could have helped?
Ultimately, as is predictable, Van Damme succeeds in taking revenge on Fender and safely returns Pearl Prophet to Atlanta's doctors so that the cure can (hopefully) be created. All in all it's not one of the greatest action films, nor is it one of the best martial arts ones out there. Perhaps if a few things were changed it would be better.
The movie largely centers on Van Damme who plays Rickenbacker, a slinger as he travels to seek revenge on Fender (played by Klyn) and his cannibalistic pirates who have kidnapped Pearl Prohphet the half human, half robot who contains needed information on how to cure the plague that befell the world. Each of the three major players has something generally odd about them, from Van Damme's superhealing to the odd fascination in making a slightly big deal over the villain's eyes.
To be fully honest, the pirates come off more as...deranged pirates. The cannibalism seems far more downplayed. Even then, the timeline is a tad annoying as we often get flashbacks, some repetitive in the case of Rickenbacker's. It's almost as if they didn't know what to do and so they decided to fill time by showing us the same flashback story over and over but the last time showing us the full thing. My question is, why not just show us the entire thing once through in the start and cut to X number of years later?
Now, if this is the future...where are all the guns? Even if the world fell into ruin which prevented futuristic guns, surely that doesn't mean older models aren't still floating around? Or vehicles of some sort. Also. Why Atlanta? Of all the cities that are still...decently populated or deemed safe, why that one? Why won't the plot explain any of this! *sighs*
Another thing noticed upon this viewing, is how the same sets seem to be recycled a bit. We get two sets of beach scenes and warehouse fights. Did they just really suck at travelling or do ruins just look that similar?
Something I don't understand is how halfway in the film, one villain is able to keep Van Damme busy long enough for backup to arrive and subdue him. Yet earlier, he was able to take on multiple other pirates. Did the other just suck that badly? And why didn't the pirate leader just use that plan right away if it's so effective?
Based off all these questions, it's hard to really say anything good about the plot when so much could have been done to better explain the current state of the world other than the quite brief overview we receive as the film opens.
